Using Anchors In WordPress

NOTE: In each instance of code, you must remove the space after the < for it to work correctly. The space has to be included here so that the code can be displayed without problems.

I had struggled for a while with trying to figure out how to use them in WordPress, but when it came down to it, it was merely a case of adding a little HTML. Here’s how to do it:

First of all, create all the text on your page, including where you will be linking from (a list of FAQs) for examples and where you will be linking to (the anchor – a set of answers for example). Bear in mind that you can use anchors to link to another page altogether, so the link does not need to be on the same page as the anchor.

Create the anchor

Once you have created all your text, go to the place that you want to place the anchor. This is most likely some text, but can just as easily be an image or any other part of your WordPress post. Making sure that you are in the HTML editing part of your WYSIWYG editor, put your cursor before the text/image/code. Once there, you will need to “mark” the text, so that the place of the anchor is specified. You should do this by putting the following code ahead of the text/code, changing the word label for any string you choose (this could be descriptive, or simply sequential numbering):

< a>Text and/or code here…< /a>

Repeat this process for every part of the page that you want anchors, using a different label for each one.

Create the link

Now that your anchor is in place, you are ready to create the link to it. This is done by using the href HTML tag. As such, use can use relative or absolute links accordingly. The href tag syntax is made up like this:

< a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '/outgoing/article_exit_link']);” href=”URL you are linking to”>Text that will link to URL< /a>

Therefore, in this case, you will create a link such as this, replacing the appropriate parts so that it suits your application:

< a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '/outgoing/article_exit_link']);” href=”http://www.yourdomain.com/faqs/#label”>Text linking to anchor< /a>

If the link and the anchor are on the same page however, you can use a relative URL, which involves deleting everything between the first quotation marks (“) and the hash symbol (#), leaving a much simpler href:

< a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '/outgoing/article_exit_link']);” href=”#label”>Text linking to anchor< /a>

Let me know if you have any problems or suggestions, but even more so, let me know if this helped you out.

man! that bald dude is everywhere…. he’s also @ Zaadz.
i wish he had a Flickr account. oh well….

rip-mix-burned on: Zaadz: WTF?! Ken Wilber @ Orkut?!

Orkut one stead ahead of Facebook now

orkut Introduces new features
1). Orkut Scraps to multiple people:

2). Privacy in groups:

3). Group of friends

4). Groups formed automagically!:

Social networking site by Google, Orkut has revamped its core functioning which is more user centric. “Until now, social networks treated people from different groups like they were all the same: they were all “friends”,” said the official blog. The change is basically in how Orkut will function now. It will help you interact with different groups according to your requirements, which was not a feature earlier. “We will change the core function of orkut so we can share and interact with different groups of friends on the Internet just like we do in real life,” the blog added. The Changes

1). Scraps to multiple people:

Copy and pasting same scrap to many contacts is a task. So now you can send scraps to your friends straight from your Orkut homepage. You can send them to all, or few selected ones. There’s a clean drop-down menu for that.

2). Privacy in groups:

You can set your privacy level for any message sent. You want a private or a group chat, Orkut gives you all the options. You can send a private scrap to a group of four people and only those can see it and reply to it. All conversation between you four friends will be a private group conversation. If you willing, you can send a public scrap to make it visible to all. Completely your choice.

3). Group of friends:

In the new redesign, all your groups appear on the homepage itself. No more extra clicks. All groups appear in a bar on top of the page. “When you click a group (for example, “college friends”), you’ll see updates, photos, videos and activities only from people who are part of that group,” the blog explains. Similarly, any message or scrap written in the text field, it will automatically select the members of the group as its default recipient and the message/scrap will be marked as private. And, of course, you can change that privacy setting before sending the message. The groups members will not get to know the name of the group. Complete privacy even in groups.

4). Groups formed automagically!:

Orkut will help your create groups on the basis of your interactions. “orkut automatically suggests some groups of friends for you, and these suggested groups will be ready for you to use. Also, you can add your personal touch to your groups at anytime and make them any way you want,” said the blog. Changes which puts you in charge of your own privacy and groups. Easy to use, fewer clicks but it will take some time to get adjusted to it. The page definitely looks neat but a lot of big chunks and big boxes every where. Thumbnail sizes is pretty decent, you can easily figure out the image. A picture-heavy page…thumbnails and some more thumbnails with some bars thrown in. Best part, you can still go back to the old version. The overhauling of the website is surely big on Orkut’s agenda at the moment. Lets wait, what else it has in store for us. Facebook has really changed the game, and according to a research report by comScore, a research firm, Facebook has already surpassed Orkut in India with 20.9 million users for July.myspace comments It won’t be long enough, this happens in other parts of the world. Orkut better catch up fast! If you are an orkut user, drop in a line about the new feature…did you like it or no? or sms wishes to

Microsoft Making Moves in the Desktop Virtualization Space

Well, that’s rather interesting. (Microsoft to buy Yahoo!?)
Microsoft making

8:40 AM, Friday. Microsoft makes an offer to buy Yahoo! for lots of cash. It’s going to be an interesting day at work! (Y! stock is actually up "only" 40-something percent for the day, but I was looking at the 1-year timeframe.)

Microsoft Making Moves in the Desktop Virtualization Space

Microsoft announced today some pretty aggressive moves in the desktop virtualization space. First, they announced their acquisition of Calista Technologies, which optimizes the remote display protocol used in hosted and other VDI-like solutions. Technology like Calista’s, along with their alliance with Citrix, are important to VDI-like solutions to give end-users an acceptable user experience, especially with interactive or multimedia-rich applications.

Microsoft also loosened Vista virtualization licensing to allow Vista Home Basic and Home Premium to be run on a virtual machine. This is good news for all involved, as users no longer have to spend the extra money on the more expensive Vista Business or Ultimate editions just to run them in a virtual machine. They also announced official support for Microsoft Office running as a virtualized application.

Both of these are more aggressive moves than is typical of Microsoft. This really shows the importance of desktop virtualization to Microsoft’s future strategy and markets. The licensing change also shows Microsoft is serious about pursuing the vision of virtualization on the desktop and the flexibility that it provides. I also think Microsoft realized that users and IT administrators want the flexibility provided by virtualization, and that virtualization makes it easy to run any operating system. Vista adoption has not been going well by any account, and virtualization support may tip more companies into trying out and adopting Vista in the enterprise.

However, by embracing a VDI solution, Microsoft may be missing the boat. VDI and other remote desktop techniques still have some fundamental technical limitations: they require a server infrastructure, the performance is poor over slow or high-latency connections, and users cannot work offline. These run counter to the recent trends of more and more people working from home or on the road, or the trend of using individual employee’s computers for work. These and other reasons are why, as part of the NSF-backed Collective computing initiative at Stanford in 2001, we started working on the next generation of desktop management, which combined the benefits of VDI’s centralized management with the benefits of local execution. This work ultimately culminated in the basis of MokaFive technology.

This article is contributed by John Whaley – Founder and CTO of MokaFive. MokaFive is the next generation desktop virtualization company managing the lifecycle of virtual “Desktops as a Service.”

Sash Windows – Some Information for UK Buyers

If you’re a UK homeowner, chances are you have sash windows in your residence. These are the most common type of windows and come in a variety of styles and sizes. Here’s some information about the sash window that you might find interesting and instructive.

What is a Sash Window?

A sash window consists of 2 wooden frames mounted in a vertical frame that contains 2 tracks. The frames, also known as sashes, hold 1 or 2 panes of glass. The sashes slide up or down in the tracks so the window can be opened or closed. In older types of window sashes, weights suspended by ropes or cords facilitate the window’s operation. When there are 2 panes of glass in a sash, it’s known as a double glazed sash window. Alternatively, there can be multiple panes of glass, also called lights, in a sash. These are held in place by narrow strips called muntin bars.

What are Some Characteristics of a Sash Window?

Since replacing sash windows can cost upwards of £600 each, it’s important to know what to look for when considering them. In wood sash windows, the muntin bars are removable. This gives the homeowner some versatility in the window’s look. In addition, removable muntin bars facilitate cleaning. Since most contemporary sliding sash windows no longer use ropes and weights, modern designs allow the sashes to be completely removed from the frame. New sash windows may also have a convenient tilt mechanism, so that the outdoor portion of the window can be cleaned from the inside. Although many types of sash replacement windows are made from wood, others are aluminum clad on the outside. Aluminum clad windows come in a variety of colors to compliment your home and never need painting or maintenance of any kind. This makes them very popular with homeowners. In addition, bespoke sash windows are widely available, meaning that custom-made shapes and sizes can be created for even the most unique window openings, such as octagonal, etc. One UK window manufacturer advertises “11,000 different patterns and styles, with over 4,000 standard shapes and sizes,” so it’s clear that sash windows are incredibly versatile.

What to Expect from a Sash Window Contractor

Many companies who are installing and replacing sash windows in the UK are also the manufacturers. This makes the installation or replacement process seamless. A good contractor will offer competitive pricing and will work within your established budget. The process begins with a site survey and consultation. Next comes the technical design and manufacture of the replacement sash windows. Finally, the windows are fitted and installed. Since most windows carry a hefty warranty (10 to 20 years), it’s important to select a well-established contractor who will be available to make repairs (if needed under the warranty) well into the future.

Sash windows are an important component of many UK homes. Doesn’t it make sense to shop as carefully for the contractor as you do the windows?
