The Pitfalls of Online Social Networking Websites

As a newly divorced woman in my forties, I am finding it rather difficult to get the hang of social networking websites. In the last three months I’ve tried MySpace, Facebook and MyYearbook. Out of the three, MySpace is the only one I still use with any regularity and only because my children also use it. Of course there are dozens more of these types of websites out there so I’m trying hard not to become disillusioned with the people I meet online.

By people I’m referring to men in particular. It seems that if you announce yourself as a newly divorced woman you have automatically painted a target on yourself. Even if you choose to hide the divorced part, it will eventually come up in conversation. This is when you will almost certainly hear the line, “I’d like to get to know you better.”

Within the first week of membership with MyYearbook I had collected several offers of phone numbers, dinner invitations, and, you guessed it, sex. The first two I turned down as graciously as I could but the last simply made me angry.

Hello, are you nuts? I don’t know about all divorced women but the majority of us are not stupid enough to actually meet anyone we chat with on-line in person. Especially when they make it perfectly clear what they’re looking for. If I were actually ready to date someone that I had met on-line I would not be shopping around on a website like MyYearbook or Facebook. If I were seriously considering internet dating I would try a reputable website like eHarmony. Dating is not my goal, finding others to talk with after a long day is.

Being single again is hard enough without being treated like a piece of meat by clueless males out to score. Do I except too much? Has the world changed so drastically over the years that it has become impossible to meet decent people on-line for a little conversation? And all this warped attention is not because I am a beauty queen. I am an average middle-aged woman. I am a mom and a grandmother. Brittney Spears I am not.

Out of all the men I have chatted with in the last few months, only one has shown himself to be witty, intelligent and a comic genius. This man also possesses something that none of the others seem to have ever heard of, manners. This does not mean I would or will run right out and meet him in person however. Prudence dictates caution in situations like these. Common sense and trusting ourselves to make the right decisions about the people we meet on-line is something many divorced or single women tend to ignore.

But there are steps we all can take to protect ourselves, such as setting up an ambiguous e-mail account or in some cases using the websites e-mail services. MySpace now provides e-mail for its members. MyYearbook offers a message service that is on site and tries to block members from giving out their e-mail addresses. And there’s always Yahoo or Hotmail if the others aren’t to your liking.

Keep your personal information to yourself. If you can’t join a social networking website without revealing every little detail about yourself then I would suggest you not join. Almost all social networking websites will have a section for you to fill out that requires your name, age or birth date, marital status, etc., and that’s fine but only as long as this information is not posted to your personal page. MySpace, Facebook and MyYearbook are all like this but they will allow you to filter your personal information so you can control what is shown to the general public. You can also choose to use a Handle, the Internet’s version of a false name.

Posting your photograph is another thing to be careful. I was shocked by some of the photos posted to the MyYearbook site and while they were not X-rated, they certainly were provocative and in some cases, downright suggestive. Some of these same women went on to complain about the men they were attracting! Have some self-respect. Do not post anything that could potentially embarrass you or damage your reputation. Full version costs only 80 pounds.

And you paid 80 pounds for a system which does not work ever.
