I’ve played with my fair share of LEGOs, but I never actually envied the little guys until I saw Dave DeGobbi’s Crawler Town, a work as impressively conceived as it is constructed. I’d forfeit bendable elbows to live in it.

It sort of reminds me of those old books on a single building—Castles or Pyramids or what have you—where you could look at the huge, detailed illustrations and imagine dozens of little stories unfolding in every corner.

Attention is even given to the world in which the Crawler Town dwells. As DeGobbi describes it:

In the old days firms sent out a press release to the local or national newspapers with announcements such as new additions to the firm, cases won and other statements the press might pick up and give some favorable mention in their publications. They would also to PR damage control and announce press conferences. What they wanted the most was exposure.

That was then. This is now. These days press releases are more and more used simply to gain links to the website.

Most potential law clients will use the web to find an appropriate lawyer in their area. One that they could be reasonable confident in. After all, seeking a lawyer means you have some sort of legal issue.

Lawyer websites are very competitive. The stakes are high. One client can mean tens of thousands dollars in fees. That’s one reason using Google’s AdWords to advertise is very expensive for lawyers. They pay and where from 4-40 dollars per click.

What any web marketer knows it is the natural searches that counts. If you search for a lawyer in Chicago you will get millions of results. 90% or more clicks will come from the top 10 firms. Unless you are on the first page in Google – your web site is just there gathering cyberdust.

So how does one get on the first page? It is not easy. There are several factors such ad keywords in the domain name, a clean and effective website and good content. In order to get great rankings in search engines – aside from the above – there is only one method that has stood the test of time:

One way – properly formatted links from related websites or content pages. There are several methods to get these links, you can ask your competitors, (good luck) you can buy them at prices ranging from -50/month or you can write articles and submit them to article directories. The purpose now is not really to have press or others read the release and write about your firm – and when they do it’s a bonus. The purpose has become much more simple: Get Links.

I have done this on several occasions, and links to my sites do increase over time. It is not a quick fix to get links and rankings, but it sure helps. I would suggest aiming for at least one release a month, maybe more. And have a strategy in place to distribute.

Couple that with some genuine article writing and submission – your site will grow in rankings – and I have seen an accelerated growth in rankings as ling as the pressrelease/article feeds are maintained.

Bottom line: Do anything for inbound links.

In fact, Okinawa_Soba (formerly known as Mr_Cream_Puff) is too kind and gentle to resort to such inflammatory monikers and incendiary name calling against these eBay-using, UN-CIVILIZED, CRETIN PIN-HEADS, and un-evolved PRIMATES who live by the dictates of their OXYGEN-STARVED, lower CROCADILLIAN brain stems, formed from the DNA of a JELLY-FISH, and having an IQ less than a TOMATO. And further….. is this entity a "HE", a "SHE"..or an "IT" ??? NOBODY KNOWS. So of course, NO ACTUAL PERSON is named in the below complaint. eBay gives the "company’s" location as SCOTTSDALE, ARIZONA. Did AZUL-TRADING even pirate their eBay name ? A Web search shows a "namesake company" based in CANADA…. and also one in CHINA. As far as the eBay version is concerned, they’re way out in LEFT FIELD.

Beside the above eBay seller ripping off almost 50 images from my photostream that are personally modified, corrected, marked, and cropped specifically for flickr use from original "public domain" images in my posession, AZUL-TRADING has also flagrantly stolen the modern copyright images of others here on flickr, as well as from copyright image sources outside of flickr ! [Actually, as I post this, from 30 to 50 of my own flickr posts appear on any given day as the seller's auctions recycle]

As some have pointed out in the viewer comments below, this type of thing is widespread in the world at large. Okinawa_Soba is under no illusion that this post will change the world, or even bring a halt to the eBay seller who I am hanging out to dry. I simply post it as a graphic demonstration, using a real-time screen grab (of which I have many more), and concrete links for those that want to make a quick "study" of this incurable disease. I have no plans to devote any new time to becoming a "Pirate Hunter".

PLEASE…..DON’T immediately jump down and leave a comment below telling me that Azul owns all rights to my photos since they are supposedly "in the Public Domain", and that he can do what he wants, when he wants, and as he pleases. That argument has been worn out on many other of my posts.

(1) Azul-Trading doesn’t tell the buyer that his so-called "photo" for sale is actually just a copy reprint. The descriptive text (not shown here) tells the buyer that it’s a REAL 8 x 10 PHOTO on PHOTOGRAPHIC PAPER. (Note to Azul : A printout of a scan copied from a flickr post is not a "real photo" — no matter what resolution you print it out as. I happen to have the "real photo" in my possession !)

(2) He has placed a COPYRIGHT "C" in a circle, and added his own watermark claiming personal copyright on my flickr SCAN — and by extension, on the ORIGINAL IMAGE which I have in my possession !!! (Note to Azul : If you want to claim that my posted scans are in the "Public Domain", and that you have the right to copy and sell them, then why are you watermarking and copyrighting the eBay scans you copied from my posts? Are you saying these are NOT in the public domain ? Why are you trying to prevent others from copying "your own" scans — after you freely copied them from my flickr photostream ? NOTE TO SELF : Send Azul a copy of the book HOW TO BE A PIRATE AND A HYPOCRITE ALL AT THE SAME TIME )

(3) He’s charging 18 bucks for a cheap quality, pixelated injet copy, when anyone here can download CC version for free right here — or ask me for a larger file if needed. (A French buyer gave Azul-Trading NEGATIVE FEEDBACK, complaining about the pixels !)

(4) Flickr policy dictates that if anyone uses a flickr scan on another website (like eBay), the user of the image MUST PROVIDE A LINK FOR THAT IMAGE BACK TO FLICKr. The seller has failed to do this, thus violating flickr’s terms of image use. (Note to Azul : Do you know how to read English?)

(5) He has changed the actual description of the image content, claiming that the dressed up photographer in the photo (T. ENAMI) is an ACTUAL SAMURAI (which T. Enami is not), thus defrauding the buyer by knowingly selling a miss-labeled item, and not telling the buyers the true story behind the image, and the man modeling the armor. (Note to Azul : Look up the phrase "Scam Artist" in the Dictionary…..if you can read English, that is…) Of course, if Azul cannot read English, I suppose he did not "knowingly" misrepresent his knowingly-pirated merchandise !

The seller has also sent e-mails to a photographer friend of mine, threatening him with legal action if my friend attempts to stop his piracy activities on eBay !

(Obviously, this eBay seller can write English — even if he can’t read it !)

PLEASE NOTE THAT, IN SPITE OF THE NEGATIVE FEEDBACK FROM FRANCE LAMENTING THE POOR QUALITY OF HIS COPY-PRINTS, MOST OF HIS BUYERS GAVE HIM POSITIVE FEEDBACK FOR SPEEDY SERVICE, WITH A FEW COMPLIMENTING HIM ON THE HIGH QUALITY OF HIS IMAGES. WordPress themes are also known as layouts or templates. These are files that create the look and feel of your blog content. Once this theme is installed, you can customize the theme in the Appearance >> Atahualpa Theme Options page. Once here, you will find a host of options to highly customize your theme. Webmasters can configure special CSS styles for things such as the header, the layout, and page features such as headings, links and menu bars. Users can easily upload header graphics that can rotate through the header graphic. Other options that can be customized include the number of columns you want on your blog (technically you can have from 1 to 5 columns), which side you want you sidebars to be on, or what you want your widget boxes to look like. The look and feel is highly customizable and is a great start to quickly getting a professional look to your blog.

2) News Magazine Theme

The free News Magazine theme was created by http://antisocialmediallc.com. This theme gives you several easily customizable options that can be set in the Appearance >> News Magazine Theme 640 Options page. The News Magazine theme doesn’t have quite as many options to set up as the Atahualpa theme, but you can add code for site tracking (can be done through the use of plugins), ad rotating and just adding text or javascript code to parts of your template.

One nice feature of this template is that you can easily take featured categories and spotlight them on your blog through simple drop-down selections. One very nice feature is that you can control the excerpt length of your blog postings on the index page. On 99.9% of the WordPress blogs out there, the home (or index) page prints the entire text of the blog post. A better format for visitors is to have a post excerpt and they can click a link to read the entire blog. Currently there is no function in WordPress that allows you to display excerpts of your blog postings. This blog theme allows you to display excerpts with their ‘Blog Mode Excerpt Length’ setting.

These two WordPress themes are varied enough to get you started and well on your way with your first (or second) WordPress blog. The ease of these customizable settings should greatly reduce your setup time while creating a fairly well customized blog. Taking the Easier Route to Generating RSS Subscribers

RSS is certainly still far from being user-friendly, which is
especially evident once you try and left-click on an RSS
subscribe button.

In most cases your browser will simply display the XML code of
the RSS feed … which does not go far in making internet users
comftorable with RSS.

Heck, if you didn’t know what RSS was and clicked on an RSS
button only to get a page full of code you don’t understand,
would that aid in turning you in to an RSS user?

Probably no. And much worse, you’d probably never consider
clicking on one of those buttons again, at least not any time
soon.

Consequently, if as a marketer you’re trying to generate RSS
subscribers, simply using an RSS subscribe button is the worst
way to go for you and for the RSS industry as a whole as well.

So, what alternatives are there?

a] CREATE AN RSS PRESENTATION PAGE

If you’re trying to generate RSS subscribers from your site and
are targeting audiences that might not be farmiliar with RSS,
you need at least a basic presentation of what RSS is on your
site, and you need to link to that either directly from the RSS
subscribe button or from a location right next to that button,
like you can see on the MarketingStudies.net example.

On this page you should explain in easy-to-understand terms what
RSS is, how your visitors can use it and how they’ll benefit,
and then provide links to some RSS readers and again links to
your RSS feeds.

This page will be instrumental in telling your visitors about
RSS and helping them subscribe to your feeds.

And of course, the feeds themselves and the RSS presentation
page should be promoted in prominent locations on your website,
especially directly below your e-mail e-zine subscription box
and, if you’re publishing topic oriented feeds, next to their
respective topics on the site, just as Lockergnome.com is doing.

B] TRANSFORM AN RSS FEED IN TO XHTML

Having a link to an RSS presentation page right next to your RSS
subscribe button does aid visitors in learning about RSS and
helps them to subscribe, but it still doesn’t solve the problem
of a user actually clicking on an RSS feed button. That will
still result in the visitor getting heaps of code he really
won’t know what to do with.

Going one step further, you can use XSL Transformations to make
sure that the feed can in fact also be displayed in a browser
(without making it useless for an RSS reader as well) … and
that with some additional information and instructions, such as
a brief overview of RSS and a quick explanation on how the user
can subscribe to this feed via an RSS reader.

I don’t want to get technical here, so to see what I mean simply
click on this link (via FeedBurner):

This is basically an RSS feed, which has been transformed in
order to be displayed in a Web browser with some additional
information, but can still be subscribed to via every RSS reader
as well.

Some feed maintanance and publishing services such as FeedBurner
already provide this functionality “out-of-the-box”, without you
having to do practically anything. All you need to do is
register for their free service, enter your feed and then get
this link, which you will place “behind” the RSS subscribe
button on your site, as a link, instead of a direct link to your
RSS feed.

If you don’t want to use a third-party service like FeedBurner,
you can actually do the XSL Transformations by yourself. More
information on how to do this is available at Wikiedia
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xslt).

c] TAKING THE MIDDLE ROAD: SMARTER SUBSCRIBE BUTTONS If you
don’t want to use a third-party service such as FeedBurner or if
your RSS vendor does not provide this functionality or if you
don’t want to be bothered with doing XSLT by yourself, there is
actually an alternative you can use.

David Battino at MacDevCenter.com
(http://www.macdevcenter.com/pub/wlg/7821) just wrote a simple
piece of code you can use instead of the typical link to your
RSS feed behind the RSS feed subscription button, which will,
after you click on the link, display a simple message saying
that in order to subscribe to the feed you need to copy and
paste this URL in your your RSS reader.

This certainly doesn’t go very far in making RSS more
user-friendly, as the notification really can’t be used to
explain what RSS is and why your visitors should use it, but it
at least saves the visitor from getting the XML code in his
browser and hating RSS before he or she even find out what it is.

Also, do not forget about using buttons like Add To MyYahoo!,
since many MyYahoo! users for example don’t know what RSS is,
but they will use this button to subscribe.

d] TARGETING EXISTING RSS USERS

If you’re targeting existing RSS users or at least users that
won’t be put off by a long list of names they won’t be able to
understand, using the free script from Methodize.org might be
the solution.

When the user hovers his mouse above your RSS feed subscribe
button, the script will display a long list of RSS readers that
the visitors can use to directly subscribe to the feed. By
simply clicking on the appropriate link, the user will quickly
subscribe to the feed with the RSS reader he is currently using.

There’s also a “What’s this” link at the bottom of the list, but
still many visitors will be put off by long list of RSS reader
names they won’t be able to understand, before even being
motivated enough to click on the “What’s this” link at the
bottom.

But still, if you’re targeting a more technical or internet
oriented audiences, this just might do the trick.

e] USING RSS AUTODISCOVERY

RSS Autodiscovery is a very nice feature that allows certain RSS
Autodiscovery-enabled browsers to find a feed on your site and
promptly offer the subscribe option to the visitor.

While most browsers still do not support this, FireFox for
example does.

Using RSS Autodiscovery can’t substitute the other options
above, but it will serve you well for the small part of your
audience that’s using RSS Autodiscovery-enabled browsers.

How to use this?

Simply place the following piece of code in to the HEAD section
of the HTML code of your webpages:
